The 5 Keyword Slots on a Coupang Listing: How to Spend Them
Why "slots" is the right way to think about it
A Coupang listing is not a blog post. You don't win by writing more — you win by placing the right Korean terms in the small number of fields Coupang actually indexes for search. Everything else (your detail page images, your brand story, your English copy) is for conversion, not discovery.
In practice there are five places a keyword can live and do work. Treat each one as a budget with a fixed number of characters or entries, and decide deliberately what goes where. Most underperforming cross-border listings I see have the same problem: three of the five slots are empty or auto-filled, and the product name is stuffed with the same word four times.
One rule before we start: never spend two slots on the same word. Repetition inside a title does not multiply relevance on Coupang, and repeating a term you already put in the search-tag field is a wasted slot.
Slot 1 — 노출상품명 (displayed product name): your one high-value asset
Coupang distinguishes 등록상품명 (registered product name, your internal name) from 노출상품명 (the displayed/exposed name shoppers and the search engine see). The displayed name carries the most weight of any field, so it deserves the most research.
The pattern Coupang itself recommends and that top listings follow is roughly: 브랜드 (brand) + 제품명/모델 (product or model name) + 핵심 속성 (key attributes: size, count, material, color) + 카테고리 명사 (the category noun a shopper would actually type). Write it as a natural Korean phrase, not a keyword pile.
The category noun at the end matters more than sellers expect. Korean shoppers search with concrete head nouns — 텀블러 (tumbler), 물티슈 (wet wipes), 요가매트 (yoga mat) — and if that exact noun isn't in your title in the exact spelling shoppers use, you're relying on Coupang to infer it.
- Pick one head noun and one modifier set. Example shape: 브랜드명 스테인리스 텀블러 500ml 보온보냉 (brand, stainless tumbler, 500ml, hot/cold retention).
- Match 띄어쓰기 (word spacing) to how shoppers type. Korean search is sensitive to spacing variants; the dominant variant is usually the one used by the top-ranking listings in your category.
- Loanwords have competing transliterations — 초콜릿 vs 초콜렛, 요거트 vs 요구르트. Put the higher-volume one in the title, the alternate in the tag field.
- No promotional language in the name: 최저가 (lowest price), 인기 (popular), 이벤트, emoji, or seller-added shipping claims get listings flagged or suppressed.
- Don't include the same word twice in different positions. Use that character budget on a second attribute instead.
Slot 2 — 검색어 (search keywords/tags): your synonym and misspelling bank
Coupang gives you a dedicated search-keyword field (commonly up to around 20 comma-separated entries, depending on the category and current Wing interface). This is the single most under-used slot by foreign sellers, usually because the field is optional and the label is in Korean.
Its job is not to repeat the title. Its job is to catch every query that means the same thing as your title but is spelled or phrased differently. That includes English terms typed in Latin letters, romanized Korean, common typos, and the Konglish shorthand Koreans actually use in chat and search.
- Synonyms and register shifts: 보온병 vs 보온 물병 vs 텀블러; 유아 vs 아기 vs baby.
- Alternate transliterations of your brand and of the product noun.
- Latin-alphabet queries: many Korean shoppers type the brand in English, especially for imported goods.
- Use-case and buyer-intent phrases: 캠핑용 (for camping), 선물용 (for gifting), 자차용, 사무실용 (for the office).
- Common IME typos — the ones produced by typing Korean with the English keyboard layout still on, which happens constantly on desktop.
Slot 3 — 브랜드 and 제조사 (brand and manufacturer)
These are small structured fields, but they feed both search and Coupang's filter rails on the left side of search results. If your brand field is blank or set to a generic placeholder, you lose the branded-search path entirely — and branded queries are the highest-converting traffic you'll ever get on Coupang.
For cross-border sellers there's a specific trap: your brand exists in Latin letters only, so Korean shoppers who have seen your product on Instagram or a review blog will search the Hangul transliteration. Decide on one canonical Hangul spelling of your brand, use it consistently across every listing, and put the Latin form in the search-tag slot. Inconsistent brand spellings across your catalog fragment your brand's search footprint and make your own listings compete with each other.
- Fill 브랜드 and 제조사 even when they're the same entity — the filter rails read them separately.
- Lock one Hangul brand spelling in a spec sheet and reuse it for every SKU, forever.
- If you have a registered Korean trademark, use exactly that spelling; it also helps with brand-protection claims later.
Slot 4 — 카테고리 and 구매/검색옵션 (category and attributes)
Category placement and structured attributes are a keyword slot even though you don't type free text into them. Coupang uses category to decide which query set your product is even eligible for, and attributes power the filters shoppers click after they search. A product sitting in the wrong leaf category can be perfectly optimized and still be effectively invisible.
Fill every attribute the category offers, including the ones that feel irrelevant. Each unfilled attribute is a filter you drop out of. If a shopper narrows to 색상: 블랙 (color: black) and your color attribute is empty, you're gone from that result set no matter how good your title is.
Also separate 구매옵션 (purchase options — what the buyer chooses, e.g. size, color) from 검색옵션 (search options — fixed product facts). Mixing them creates variant sets that look messy and can split your reviews across items, which hurts ranking indirectly.
- Find the leaf category by searching your head keyword on Coupang and checking the breadcrumb of the top 3–5 organic results — copy where they sit, not where you think it belongs.
- Complete 100% of attribute fields; treat blanks as lost impressions.
- Keep one variant family per product so reviews and sales history concentrate on a single item.
- Re-check category mapping after Coupang taxonomy updates; categories do get split and renamed.
Slot 5 — 옵션명 and 모델명 (option names and model number)
The last slot is the smallest and the most often wasted: the names you give each variant, plus the model/part number field. Option names appear in the listing and are lightly searchable, and model numbers catch the very high-intent queries from shoppers who have a spec sheet or a competitor's part number in hand.
Write option names in Korean with the unit spelled the way Koreans write it — 500ml, 2개입 (2-pack), 대용량 (large capacity) — not "Option A / Option B". A shopper scanning a variant dropdown in a language they read makes faster decisions, and you pick up a few long-tail queries for free.
- Name variants descriptively: 블랙 500ml, 화이트 750ml — never Type 1 / Type 2.
- Include pack-count language (2개입, 3개 세트) because bundle queries are a distinct, less competitive query family.
- Enter your real 모델명 / part number; it's free long-tail traffic from comparison shoppers.
How to allocate, then verify
Working order that avoids double-spending: pick the head noun and its dominant spelling first, build the title around it, then dump every synonym, transliteration, typo and use-case phrase into the search-tag field, then complete brand, category and attributes, then name your variants. Anything you catch yourself repeating gets cut and replaced with something new.
Then verify, because Korean keyword decisions made without data are guesses. You need to know which spelling variant actually carries volume, and whether your changes moved you up. SeoulRank is built for exactly this gap — Korean keyword research and daily Coupang rank tracking presented in English — but whatever you use, the discipline is the same: change one slot, track the affected keywords for a couple of weeks, and keep what moves.
Two practical habits: keep a per-SKU record of what you put in each of the five slots so you can attribute rank changes to a specific edit, and re-audit your top 20 SKUs quarterly. Korean search language shifts fast — seasonal terms, new Konglish coinages, and trending use-case phrases appear and fade, and the tag slot is cheap to refresh.
