The 5 Keyword Slots on a Coupang Listing: How to Spend Them
Think in slots, not in keyword lists
Most new Coupang sellers treat keyword work as one big list: find 40 Korean phrases, cram them all into the product name, hope for the best. That fails on Coupang specifically, because the platform truncates long titles, penalizes obvious keyword stuffing in the displayed name, and — importantly — offers separate fields that already exist to absorb your secondary keywords.
A better mental model: your listing has five distinct keyword slots, each with a different job and a different amount of ranking weight. Once you know which slot does what, you stop fighting over the same 50 characters and start covering far more search demand with the same keyword research.
The five slots, in rough order of ranking influence:
- **노출상품명 (displayed product name)** — the title shoppers see in search results
- **검색어 (search keywords / tags)** — a hidden field for synonyms and long-tail terms
- **카테고리 (category)** — determines which searches you're even eligible for
- **구매옵션 & 검색옵션 (purchase and search attributes)** — powers filters and attribute-matched queries
- **브랜드 + 모델명 (brand and model name)** — captures branded and model-number demand
Slot 1: 노출상품명 — the title is for your top 3 head terms only
Coupang's own listing guidance pushes a structured title format rather than a keyword dump: roughly 브랜드 (brand) + 제품명 (product name) + 규격/수량 (size or quantity) + 색상 (color). Titles that read like natural Korean product names — and that match the shape of titles already ranking — perform better than titles built as keyword strings.
Practically, that means the title has room for one primary keyword and one or two close variants, plus the specifiers Korean shoppers actually type (quantity, capacity, count, color, target user). Everything else belongs in another slot.
Two rules that save a lot of pain: put the highest-volume keyword early, because mobile search results truncate titles aggressively; and never repeat the same word twice hoping for extra weight. Repetition doesn't help and can trip Coupang's title quality checks.
- Do: `브랜드 스테인리스 텀블러 500ml 보온보냉 블랙` (brand + core term + spec + benefit + color)
- Don't: `텀블러 보온병 물병 컵 워터보틀 커피컵 대용량 텀블러` (synonym pile, no specs)
- Include the counting unit Koreans search with — 3개입 (pack of 3), 100매 (100 sheets), 1kg — these are real query components, not filler
- Watch for loanword vs. native-Korean splits: 텀블러 (tumbler) and 보온병 (thermos) are different search intents; pick one for the title, put the other in slot 2
- If your brand has no recognition in Korea, don't spend precious early characters on it — lead with the category keyword instead
Slot 2: 검색어 — your synonym and long-tail dumping ground
The 검색어 field (search keywords) is where most cross-border sellers leave value on the table. It's not shown to shoppers, it accepts multiple comma-separated terms, and it exists precisely to catch queries your title can't accommodate. Coupang limits how many you can add, so treat each entry as a decision.
Spend these slots on genuinely different queries, not on rearranged versions of your title. The highest-value entries are usually: alternative Korean words for the same object, romanized or English spellings Korean shoppers still type, misspellings and spacing variants, use-case phrases, and gift/season modifiers.
Korean spacing (띄어쓰기) is the sneaky one. 아기물티슈 and 아기 물티슈 (baby wipes, with and without a space) are typed by different people, and matching behavior isn't identical. If a spacing variant has real volume, it deserves a slot.
- Synonym pairs: native Korean vs. loanword vs. English (e.g. 손목보호대 / 리스트밴드 / wrist band)
- Use-case phrases: 캠핑용, 자차용, 사무실용, 산후조리 — the 용 suffix means 'for use in/with'
- Gift framing: 선물용 (for gifting), 답례품 (return gift), plus 명절 (holiday) terms around Seollal and Chuseok
- Common misspellings and keyboard slips — Koreans type fast on mobile and Coupang sees the typos
- Skip: your own brand name if it's already in the title, generic words like 정품 (genuine) or 무료배송 (free shipping), and any term you can't back with actual search volume
Slot 3: 카테고리 — eligibility before optimization
Category choice isn't a keyword in the literal sense, but it gates everything else. Coupang's search leans heavily on category context, and a mismatched category can make a perfectly optimized listing effectively invisible for its main keyword — while also exposing you to the wrong set of competitors and the wrong filter set.
The reliable method is competitor-derived, not intuition-derived: search your primary keyword, open the top five or six organic listings, and check which category leaf they sit in. If they cluster in one leaf, that's the category the algorithm associates with your keyword. Your own logic about where the product 'belongs' is irrelevant.
Also check the required and optional attribute fields attached to each candidate category. Categories differ in how many filterable attributes they support, and a richer attribute set means more ways to be found. Sometimes the slightly less obvious leaf is the better commercial choice for that reason alone.
- Match the leaf category of the top organic (non-ad) results for your head keyword, not the sponsored ones
- If two categories are plausible, pick the one whose filters match how shoppers narrow your product type
- Re-check category after any Coupang taxonomy update — leaves get split and merged
- Changing category later can reset ranking signals, so get it right before you start driving traffic
Slot 4: 옵션 and 속성 — the filters most sellers leave blank
Coupang's attribute fields (구매옵션, the buying options like size and color, and 검색옵션, the searchable/filterable specs) do double duty. They power the left-hand filters that Korean shoppers use constantly on mobile, and they give the search engine structured facts about your product that unstructured title text can't provide.
Fill in every optional attribute, not just the required ones. A shopper who filters to 용량: 500ml and 재질: 스테인리스 has extremely high purchase intent, and if you skipped those fields you simply don't appear. This is the cheapest ranking work available on Coupang: no research, no copywriting, just completeness.
Option naming matters too. Write option values the way Korean shoppers say them — 블랙 rather than Black, 500ml rather than 0.5L — and keep option sets clean. Sprawling option lists with near-duplicate variants dilute reviews across SKUs and confuse the buy-box logic.
- Complete 100% of available attribute fields, including the ones marked optional
- Use Korean-standard units and color names in option values
- Consolidate: one listing per genuinely distinct product, with options for real variants — not five listings for five colors
- Where an attribute is also a search term (capacity, material, target age), you now have that keyword covered structurally — free the space in your title
Slot 5: 브랜드 and 모델명 — small slot, occasional jackpot
The brand and model-name fields are narrow but worth a deliberate decision. If you're an unknown overseas brand, these fields won't drive volume on their own — but they establish a consistent entity across your catalog, which helps when you eventually do build recognition and run branded ads.
Where this slot occasionally pays off big: model numbers and compatibility. Sellers of accessories, parts, filters, and cases should treat model and compatibility strings as first-class keywords. Korean shoppers search device model codes directly, and those queries convert at very high rates because intent is unambiguous.
One caution: never put another company's brand in your brand field, and be careful with compatibility phrasing. 갤럭시 S24 호환 (Galaxy S24 compatible) in an appropriate field or in the detail page is normal; claiming the brand as yours invites a takedown.
- Use one exact Korean transliteration of your brand across every listing — inconsistency splits your brand's search footprint
- Include full model codes, including the variants Koreans type with and without hyphens
- For accessories, list compatible models exhaustively in the appropriate compatibility or 검색어 field
- Register your brand with Coupang if eligible; it unlocks brand-level surfaces and protects against hijacking
A simple weekly routine to check whether your spend is working
Slot allocation is a hypothesis, and Coupang tells you whether it was right — but only if you're tracking positions over time rather than eyeballing search results occasionally. The pattern to look for: a keyword you put in the title should climb faster than a keyword you put in 검색어. If a 검색어 term is outperforming a title term, you've mis-ranked your keywords and should swap them.
Set a fixed set of 20–40 target Korean keywords and record your rank for each daily. Non-Korean-reading sellers usually need help here, which is the gap SeoulRank fills — Korean keyword volumes and daily Coupang rank positions presented in English, so you can see which slot is actually earning its keep without deciphering the SERP yourself.
Then edit conservatively. Change one slot at a time, wait one to two weeks, and read the rank movement. Rewriting the title, the tags, and the options in the same session teaches you nothing about which change mattered.
- Track your primary keyword, three secondary keywords, and a handful of long-tails per listing
- Log rank by keyword and by date; look at trend direction, not single-day noise
- Promote consistently-converting 검색어 terms into the title; demote title terms that never rank
- Re-audit after category changes, competitor entries, or major seasonal shifts (Seollal, Chuseok, back-to-school)
- Keep a change log per SKU — six months in, you'll want to know what you did and when
