The 5 Keyword Slots on a Coupang Listing: How to Spend Them

Think in slots, not in "SEO text"

On Amazon or eBay you can get away with dumping keywords wherever there's a text box. Coupang is stricter and more structured. Each listing has a small set of fields that feed search, and each field behaves differently: some are free text, some are controlled vocabularies, and some are basically ignored by the search index but matter enormously for filters and conversion.

The practical consequence for a non-Korean seller is that you can't win by writing more. You win by mapping a finite keyword set onto five slots without overlap. Coupang generally de-duplicates repeated terms, so the third time you write 무선 (wireless) in a title you have spent characters and gained nothing.

Before you touch the listing, build a keyword list of roughly 20–40 Korean terms for the product: the head term, two or three realistic synonyms, the attribute words shoppers filter on, brand and model strings, and a handful of long-tail phrases. Then assign each term to exactly one slot.

Slot 1: 상품명 — write it in Coupang's own order

Coupang publishes a product-naming convention and its catalog is visibly built around it. The pattern is roughly: 브랜드 (brand) + 제품명 (product name) + 시리즈/모델 (series or model) + 종류 (type) + 포장단위 (pack size) + 색상 (color) + 사이즈 (size). Listings that follow it read like every other listing in the category, which is what you want — Coupang matches your title against a catalog of similar items, and deviating makes you look like a low-quality or duplicate entry.

Keep it short. Long, stuffed titles are common among careless sellers but they dilute relevance and look spammy on mobile, where most Coupang traffic lives. Aim to state the head keyword once, clearly, plus the two or three attributes a buyer would search alongside it.

Two rules that catch foreign sellers repeatedly. First, use the Korean term shoppers actually type, not the dictionary translation — 텀블러 for an insulated bottle, not 보온병, if your competitors and search volume say so. Second, don't include promotional language: 최저가 (lowest price), 무료배송 (free shipping), 인기 (popular), and special characters are against the naming rules and can get a listing suppressed or edited.

Slot 2: 검색어 — the synonym and misspelling bucket

The 검색어 (search keyword) field on the registration form is where you put everything the title can't hold. Its job is coverage, not emphasis. Anything already in your 상품명 is redundant here — spend the slots on terms you deliberately left out.

The highest-value entries are usually: the second-most-common synonym for the head term, English loanword vs. native Korean variants (마우스패드 vs. 키보드장패드 style pairs), spacing variants, common typos from 한글 keyboard slips, and use-case phrases like 자취방 (studio apartment living) or 캠핑용 (for camping) that people append to searches.

This is the slot where English-only sellers lose the most, because you can't intuit that Koreans search 물티슈 (wet wipes) far more than the formal term, or that a product has a nickname that never appears in supplier documentation. Volume data matters more than translation quality. Tools like SeoulRank exist for exactly this gap — Korean search volume and competitor keyword sets presented in English — but even a manual pass through Coupang's own autocomplete and 연관검색어 (related searches) for your head term will surface a usable list.

Slot 3: 카테고리 — the slot you can't keyword your way out of

Category assignment is a keyword slot in disguise. Coupang search is heavily category-scoped: a shopper who clicks into a category or applies filters is now searching a subset, and if you're in the wrong leaf node you are invisible no matter how good your title is. Miscategorization is the single most common structural error in cross-border listings, usually because the seller picked the category that translated most literally.

The fix is empirical, not theoretical. Search your main Korean keyword on Coupang, open the three or four top-ranking competitors, and look at the breadcrumb trail on their product pages. Put yourself where the money is, even if another node looks more technically correct.

Category also determines which 속성 fields you get and which filters shoppers see, so this choice cascades into Slot 4. Changing categories later usually resets some of your listing's accumulated performance signals, so get it right at registration.

Slot 4: 속성 & 옵션 — free ranking you're probably skipping

The 속성 (attribute) fields are the structured values Coupang uses to build the filter sidebar: material, capacity, count, age range, certification, power source, and so on. Filling every available field is unglamorous data entry, and most foreign sellers leave half of it blank. Those blanks are the reason a listing disappears the moment a shopper clicks a filter.

Option names (옵션명) matter too. If you sell a three-pack and a five-pack, express that as structured options on one listing rather than as separate listings with near-identical titles — Coupang consolidates aggressively and duplicate listings compete with each other. Write option values the way shoppers phrase them: 500ml, 2개입, 블랙, not "Variant A."

One more attribute-adjacent point: 로켓배송 (Rocket Delivery) eligibility and delivery speed behave like a ranking input in practice, because they lift conversion and Coupang's ranking is conversion-sensitive. If you're comparing a cheaper 3PL against a faster one, factor search visibility into the math, not just shipping cost.

Slot 5: 상세페이지 — conversion, which is ranking with a delay

The detail page and images carry little to no direct keyword weight in Coupang search. Sellers who learn this sometimes conclude it doesn't matter. The opposite is true: Coupang ranks heavily on performance signals, so the page that converts better climbs, and the page that climbs gets more impressions to convert. Slot 5 is where you cash in the traffic the other four slots earned.

Practical requirements for Korean shoppers: a full-width image stack (Korean detail pages are image-heavy, not text-heavy), size and measurement info in metric with a comparison object, clear return and A/S (after-service) terms, and a visible answer to "is this the real thing and will it arrive fast." Machine-translated Korean is instantly recognizable and kills trust — budget for a native pass on the first screenful at minimum.

Finally, close the loop with measurement. Note your rank for your five most important Korean keywords the day you launch, then check weekly. Rank movement after a title or attribute edit is the only reliable way to learn which slot is doing the work for your category — daily tracking (SeoulRank does this in English, or you can spot-check manually) turns these guidelines into your own data.
