The 5 Keyword Slots on a Coupang Listing: How to Spend Them

Think of your listing as a keyword budget, not a keyword dump

Coupang's search engine doesn't reward you for saying the same thing five times. It rewards coverage — the number of distinct, relevant queries your listing can legitimately match — multiplied by how well you convert on those queries.

So the right mental model is a budget. You have five slots with different rules and different weights. Every keyword you repeat in a second slot is a keyword you didn't add. For most non-Korean sellers, the single biggest win is simply eliminating duplication across slots and using the freed space for synonyms Korean shoppers actually type.

The five slots, in rough order of weight: 상품명 (product name), 검색어 / 키워드 (search tags), 카테고리 (category assignment), 옵션명 (option names), and 상품 속성 / 고시정보 (product attributes and mandatory disclosure fields).

Slot 1 — 상품명 (product name): your highest-value real estate

The product name carries the most weight in both ranking and click-through, and it's the only slot the shopper reads in the search results. Coupang's own guidance pushes a clean structure: 브랜드 (brand) + 제품명/모델 (product or model name) + 핵심 속성 (key attributes) + 용량/수량 (volume or quantity).

Resist the urge to stuff. Long, comma-chained Korean titles look like spam to shoppers and get trimmed in mobile search results. A tight 30–45 character Korean title that reads naturally will usually out-convert a 90-character one, and conversion feeds back into rank.

The hard part for a non-Korean seller is word choice. Korean often has a native word and a loanword for the same product — 보온병 and 텀블러, 손전등 and 랜턴, 식기건조대 and 디시랙. These are not interchangeable in search volume, and the gap can be large. Pick the higher-volume term for the title and park the alternate in your tags.

Slot 2 — 검색어 / 키워드 (search tags): where synonyms go to work

The tag field is invisible to shoppers, which makes it the right home for everything that would uglify your title. Treat it as a synonym and long-tail reservoir, not a second title.

The rule that matters most: do not repeat words already in your product name. Repetition adds no ranking value in practice and burns a slot you could spend on a query you're currently invisible for.

Spend tags on the four categories below. If you're not reading Korean, this is exactly the research you need to outsource to a tool — SeoulRank surfaces Korean search terms with English glosses and volume so you can see that, say, 차량용 (for car use) pulls far more searches than the term you'd get from a dictionary.

Slot 3 — 카테고리 (category): the slot people forget is a keyword slot

Category assignment is a ranking input, not just an organizational one. Coupang scores your listing against other listings in the same category, and many high-intent queries are effectively category-locked. A good product in the wrong category competes against the wrong set and loses.

It also drives which filter chips appear on the left rail of search results. If you're in the wrong node, shoppers filtering by material, capacity, or age range never see you at all.

Check your category by searching your top target keyword yourself and looking at where the top ten organic results sit. If they're all in a node you're not in, move. Also check whether a more specific leaf node exists — deeper is usually better, because competition thins out and the attribute filters get more useful.

Slot 4 — 옵션명 (option names): small field, real search surface

Option names are indexed and they appear in search result thumbnails on some surfaces. Sellers who write 옵션1, 옵션2 are throwing away free keywords.

Write option names as descriptive Korean noun phrases: 블랙 500ml instead of A, 유아용 90cm instead of Size 2. This picks up colour-plus-size long-tail queries and reduces the returns that come from shoppers guessing wrong.

One caution: don't create option variants purely to farm keywords. Coupang consolidates and penalises obviously artificial option sets, and scattered options split your review count — which matters more for rank than the marginal keyword does.

Slot 5 — 상품 속성 / 고시정보 (attributes and disclosure fields): the filter play

These structured fields — material, capacity, certification, origin, age range, plus the legally mandated 상품정보제공고시 disclosures — are the least glamorous slot and the one most often left half-empty by overseas sellers.

Fill every field. Incomplete attributes get you excluded from filtered search, and filtered search is where buying intent concentrates. A shopper who ticks 스테인리스 and 1L 이상 is far closer to purchase than one browsing the raw category. Empty fields also correlate with listings that Coupang deprioritises in quality scoring.

For cross-border sellers specifically, make sure 원산지 (country of origin), 제조국 (country of manufacture), and any required KC certification numbers are accurate. Errors here cause listing suspension, which costs you far more than any keyword gain.

Putting it together: a 30-minute audit per listing

Run this pass on your top ten SKUs before you touch anything else. Most sellers find two or three slots sitting completely empty.

Then track the result. Keyword edits on Coupang don't show up instantly — rank typically settles over several days to a couple of weeks, and you need daily position data on your specific target keywords to tell whether a change helped or whether you just caught a traffic swing. Checking rank by hand in Korean search is how good tests get abandoned; daily automated tracking is how they get finished.
