The 5 Keyword Slots on a Coupang Listing: How to Spend Them
Why "slots" is the right mental model
On Amazon you have a title, five bullets, and a backend search-terms field. Coupang works differently: your indexable text is spread across a handful of structured fields, most of which are short, and some of which you cannot edit freely after the listing goes live. If you dump every keyword you found into the product name, you waste the other slots and you look spammy to Korean shoppers — which hurts click-through, which hurts rank.
Treat it as a budget. You have roughly five places where Korean keywords do real work, each with a different job. Spend a keyword in the slot where it earns the most, and don't spend it twice.
The five slots, in descending order of how much they typically move search placement: 상품명 (product name), 검색어 (search tags), 노출속성 / 구매옵션 (display attributes and purchase options), 브랜드·제조사·모델명 (brand, manufacturer, model), and 카테고리 (category placement). The detail page (상세페이지) is a sixth surface that affects conversion far more than indexing, because most sellers upload it as an image.
- Slot 1 — 상품명 (product name): your highest-weight, most visible text.
- Slot 2 — 검색어 (search tags): invisible to buyers, catches variants and synonyms.
- Slot 3 — 노출속성 / 구매옵션 (attributes and options): powers filters, which are where high-intent buyers actually narrow down.
- Slot 4 — 브랜드 / 제조사 / 모델명: matched on brand-name and model-number searches.
- Slot 5 — 카테고리: not text, but it decides which queries you are even eligible for.
Slot 1: 상품명 (product name) — spend it on your two or three money keywords
Coupang's own guidance points sellers toward a clean formula: 브랜드 + 제품명 + 상품군 + 규격/수량 (brand + product name + product type + spec/quantity). Keep it short — well under the character limit rather than at it. Long, keyword-stuffed names are common on Coupang, but they are also correlated with the listings that never escape page three, because Coupang actively discourages repetition and irrelevant terms in this field.
Your goal here is one primary keyword (the highest-volume Korean phrase that genuinely describes the product) plus one or two qualifying modifiers a buyer would actually type. If your product is a stainless steel insulated tumbler, the primary might be 텀블러 (tumbler); the modifiers might be 스테인리스 (stainless) and 보온보냉 (hot/cold retention).
Do not translate your English title. English titles translated word-for-word almost always miss the phrase Koreans actually search. "Yoga mat" is 요가매트, but the high-volume long tail is often 요가매트 두꺼운 (thick yoga mat) or 층간소음 매트 (interfloor-noise mat) depending on the buying motive. Pull the phrasing from real Korean query data, not from a dictionary — this is the part of the workflow SeoulRank exists to remove the guesswork from.
- Never repeat the same word twice in the product name; Coupang treats repetition as a quality problem, not a ranking boost.
- Include size, count, or capacity in the format Koreans write it (500ml, 2개입, 10매) — these appear in real queries.
- Skip promotional language (무료배송, 최저가, 인기) — it does not index and can trigger listing restrictions.
- If you sell a set, say so: 세트 (set) and 2개세트 are real search terms.
- Ask a Korean speaker (or a native-speaker check) whether the name reads like a product or like a keyword pile. If it reads like a pile, cut it.
Slot 2: 검색어 (search tags) — spend it on everything you couldn't fit in the name
The 검색어 field is your backend tag list. Buyers never see it, so this is where you put the messy reality of Korean search: English loanwords in Hangul, romanized spellings, common misspellings, colloquial names, and Konglish compounds. Coupang gives you a limited number of tags, so treat each one as a distinct query family, not a synonym drill.
The single biggest miss for non-Korean sellers is transliteration variance. The same foreign word often has two or three accepted Hangul spellings, and shoppers use all of them. 초콜릿 vs 초콜렛 (chocolate). 요거트 vs 요구르트 (yogurt). 케이스 vs 케이스 spelled with different spacing. Each variant is a separate query with separate volume.
Also put category-adjacent use cases here rather than in the title. A silicone baking mat might tag 베이킹용품 (baking supplies), 실리콘패드, 오븐매트, and 제빵도구 (bread-making tools) — none of which belong in a clean product name, all of which get searched.
- One tag = one query family. Don't waste tags on words already in your product name.
- Include Hangul transliteration variants and the common misspelling if it has real volume.
- Include the gift angle if relevant: 선물, 집들이선물 (housewarming gift), 답례품 (return gift) drive seasonal traffic.
- Include the problem, not just the product: 냄새제거 (odor removal), 미끄럼방지 (anti-slip), 층간소음 (interfloor noise).
- Avoid competitor brand names — Coupang enforces against this and it can get the listing pulled.
Slot 3: 노출속성 and 구매옵션 — the slot almost every foreign seller under-fills
Every Coupang category ships with a set of structured attributes: color, size, material, capacity, target age, certification, pack count, and dozens of category-specific ones. These feed the left-hand filter rail on search results. If you leave an attribute blank, you are invisible to any shopper who uses that filter — and filter users convert at a much higher rate than people scrolling raw results, because they have already decided what they want.
Fill in every single attribute the category offers, even the ones that feel trivial. Choose from the dropdown values rather than typing free text wherever Coupang lets you, because free text often doesn't map to the filter.
Your 구매옵션 (purchase option) names matter too. If you sell one product in five colors, put them under one listing as options rather than five separate listings — consolidated reviews and sales history compound into rank far faster than five thin listings each starting from zero.
- Complete 100% of category attributes, including certification and origin fields.
- Use dropdown values, not free text, so you appear in filters.
- Write option names in Korean that match how buyers describe the variant (블랙, 100ml, L사이즈), not internal SKU codes.
- One product, one listing, multiple options — don't split your review velocity.
- Re-check attributes when Coupang adds new ones to your category; older listings do not get backfilled.
Slots 4 and 5: brand fields and category placement
브랜드 (brand), 제조사 (manufacturer), and 모델명 (model name) are matched directly on brand and model queries. If your brand is Latin-script, decide on one Hangul rendering and use it consistently everywhere — in the brand field, in the product name, and as a tag. Korean shoppers who see your brand on Instagram or a blog review will search it in Hangul, and if no listing carries that spelling, that traffic goes nowhere.
카테고리 (category) is the slot with the highest cost of error. Coupang's ranking and filtering are heavily category-scoped, so the wrong category means you are competing for queries you can't win and missing the ones you should. Changing category later often means losing accumulated signals, so get it right before launch by searching your primary keyword and checking which category the top-ranking listings sit in.
A quick sanity test: search your main Korean keyword, open the top three results, and look at the breadcrumb trail. If your planned category doesn't match, use theirs.
- Pick one Hangul spelling of your brand and never deviate from it.
- Put the model number in 모델명 exactly as it appears on your packaging — Koreans do search model numbers, especially for electronics and parts.
- Choose category by copying the top-ranking competitors for your primary keyword, not by reading the category tree.
- If two categories look plausible, check which one has the filter attributes that describe your product best.
Allocating your keyword list across the five slots
Build the list first, then assign. Start with 20–40 Korean queries for your product, sorted by estimated search volume and by how directly they describe what you sell. Then work down the slots in order: the top two or three go in the product name, the next tier becomes tags, use-case and spec terms map to attributes, and brand variants go in the brand fields.
The discipline is in what you leave out. A keyword that gets you traffic but not sales lowers your conversion rate for that query, and conversion rate is one of the strongest inputs into Coupang's ranking. It is better to rank 5th on three tight keywords than 40th on thirty loose ones.
Then measure. Note your starting position for your five or six priority keywords, change one slot at a time, and watch daily. Rank movement on Coupang is fast enough that you can usually read a title change within one to two weeks — but only if you have a baseline. Daily tracking in English (SeoulRank does this) is the difference between knowing your edit worked and guessing.
- Rank your keyword list by volume × relevance, not volume alone.
- Assign every keyword to exactly one slot; duplicates waste budget.
- Change one slot at a time so you can attribute the result.
- Track 5–10 priority keywords daily rather than 100 occasionally.
- Revisit the whole allocation after your first 30–50 reviews — your winning keyword is often not the one you predicted.
