The 5 Keyword Slots on a Coupang Listing: How to Spend Them
Why "slots" is the right mental model
On Amazon you get a title, five bullets, and a backend search-terms box. Coupang is structured differently, and most non-Korean sellers only fill two of the available fields — usually the product name and whatever the category form forces them to enter. Everything else gets left blank or auto-filled by the bulk upload template.
Think of your listing as five distinct keyword slots, each with a different job. Some are ranking inputs, some are filter inputs, and some only matter for conversion. Spending the same keyword in all five is wasted inventory; leaving a slot empty is worse.
The five slots, in order of how much attention they deserve:
- **상품명 (product name)** — your highest-weight ranking field, and the text buyers actually read
- **검색어 / 서치 태그 (search keywords / search tags)** — the closest thing Coupang has to backend terms
- **카테고리 + 검색옵션·속성 (category plus search options and attributes)** — filter eligibility, not text matching
- **옵션명 (option names)** — variant labels that get indexed and shown on the search card
- **브랜드·제조사 + 상세페이지 (brand/manufacturer fields and the detail page)** — trust signals and long-tail catch-all
Slot 1: 상품명 (product name) — spend your best keyword here, once
Coupang's own listing guidance pushes a formula: **브랜드 (brand) + 제품명 (product name) + 상품군 (product type) + 모델명·규격 (model or spec) + 수량·용량 (quantity or volume)**. Follow it. Listings that read like a spec sheet in that order perform better than listings that read like a marketing tagline, and Coupang has historically been willing to suppress or rewrite names that keyword-stuff.
The key discipline is *no repeats*. Coupang does not reward you for saying 무선 (wireless) three times. Every token in the name should be a distinct search concept. Front-load the head term — the exact phrase Korean buyers type most — then add the one or two modifiers that define your variant.
Two traps specific to foreign sellers: machine-translated names, and English-only names. Korean shoppers search in a mix of Hangul and romanized English, but the *head noun* is almost always Hangul. If your name is "Stainless Steel Insulated Tumbler 500ml" you are invisible to anyone searching 텀블러 (tumbler).
- Include the Hangul head term even if your brand is English — e.g. `BrandX 스테인리스 보온 텀블러 500ml 블랙`
- Drop promotional words entirely: 최저가 (lowest price), 인기 (popular), 무료배송 (free shipping) do not rank and can trigger review
- Keep it under roughly 100 characters; long names get truncated on mobile cards, which is where most Coupang traffic sits
- Include the spec buyers filter by (capacity, size, count) as a number plus unit, exactly as Korean listings write it
- One brand name only — do not add competitor or "compatible with" brands into the name field
Slot 2: 검색어 (search keywords) — the synonym dumping ground
Inside Coupang Wing (the seller backend) the product registration form has a 검색어 field where you can add multiple comma-separated tags. This is the only place you can safely put terms you deliberately kept out of the product name: synonyms, misspellings, romanizations, dialect variants, and adjacent use cases.
Korean creates an unusual number of synonym clusters for the same object — a native word, a Sino-Korean word, and a loanword transliteration all coexisting. 물병 / 보틀 / 텀블러 for drinkware; 이어폰 / 무선이어폰 / 블루투스이어폰 for earbuds. Buyers split across all of them, so each cluster member is a separate keyword you need coverage for.
This is where English-language keyword tooling earns its keep. You need to know not just that a synonym exists but which one carries volume — that is exactly the gap SeoulRank's Korean keyword data is built to close, since guessing between 물병 and 보틀 with no volume signal is a coin flip.
- Fill the field completely — unused tags are pure waste, there is no penalty for breadth within your category
- Include common typos and 자판 오타 (keyboard-layout typos, where someone types Korean phonetics with the English layout on)
- Add romanized forms of your brand and the reverse: Hangul transliteration of an English brand (e.g. `나이키` alongside `Nike`)
- Add gift and occasion terms if relevant: 선물 (gift), 집들이선물 (housewarming gift), 답례품 (return gift)
- Do not repeat words already in your product name — you gain nothing and lose a slot
Slot 3: 카테고리 and 검색옵션 (category and search options) — filters, not text
This slot behaves differently from the first two. Category placement and the 속성 (attribute) values you enter do not primarily match text queries — they determine whether you appear when a shopper narrows results using the left-hand filter rail. Miss an attribute and you are silently excluded from a filtered result set, no matter how good your keywords are.
Foreign sellers lose here constantly because bulk-upload templates make attributes optional. Filling color, material, size, target user, and certification fields is unglamorous and it directly expands the number of result pages you can appear on.
Category choice is also a ranking lever. Coupang ranks within category, so a slightly narrower, less contested category can be worth more than the obvious broad one — but only if buyers actually browse there. Check where the current top sellers for your head keyword are categorized and match them rather than inventing your own placement.
- Fill every attribute field, including ones that feel obvious or redundant
- Match the category of the top 5–10 organic results for your primary keyword instead of choosing by intuition
- Enter values using Coupang's dropdown options where offered — free-text equivalents often will not register as filter values
- Re-check attributes after any Coupang category restructure; fields get added and your old listing keeps the blanks
Slot 4: 옵션명 (option names) — free keyword real estate most sellers ignore
If you sell variants, each option needs a name, and those names are indexed and often displayed on the search card and in the option selector. A listing with options named `1`, `2`, `3` throws away several searchable strings. A listing with `블랙 500ml`, `화이트 500ml`, `블랙 750ml` picks up color and capacity coverage for free.
Option names also carry conversion weight. Korean shoppers scan the option dropdown before scrolling the detail page. Ambiguous option names produce hesitation, and on Coupang hesitation shows up as a lower conversion rate, which feeds back into ranking.
Write option names in the same style Korean sellers do: attribute value first, unit attached to the number, no punctuation clutter. Keep the ordering consistent across all variants so the dropdown reads as a clean grid.
- Use descriptive Hangul values, not codes or SKUs
- Include the differentiating spec in every option name, even when it is the same across variants (e.g. capacity)
- Order options so the most popular variant appears first — it becomes the default thumbnail
- Avoid duplicating the entire product name inside each option name; it truncates and looks like spam
Slot 5: 브랜드·제조사 and the 상세페이지 (brand fields and detail page)
The 브랜드 (brand) and 제조사 (manufacturer) fields feed Coupang's brand filter and brand-store surfaces. Enter them consistently — the exact same string every time, across every SKU. Inconsistent spellings fragment your brand into multiple filter entries and you lose the ability to be browsed as a brand.
The 상세페이지 (product detail page) is mostly images on Coupang, which means any keywords baked into image files are invisible to search. Put your long-tail language in the text portions instead: the 상품 주요 정보 (key product information) fields, the text blocks above and below the image stack, and any structured spec table. This is where niche phrasing, comparison language, and problem-framing terms go — the stuff too specific for the name and too wordy for tags.
Detail page text is also your best defense against returns, which on Coupang materially affect your account health. Spell out sizing in Korean conventions, list what is and is not included, and state realistic delivery expectations if you ship cross-border.
- Use one canonical brand string, byte-for-byte identical across all listings
- Never leave brand blank on a private-label product — enter your own brand rather than 기타 (other) or 노브랜드 (no brand)
- Put long-tail and question-style phrasing in detail page *text*, never inside images
- Include a Hangul spec table: 소재 (material), 크기 (size), 원산지 (country of origin), 주의사항 (cautions)
Allocating keywords across the five slots
Build one keyword list per product, sort it by volume, then assign rather than repeat. The head term and its two strongest modifiers go in the product name. The next tier of synonyms, transliterations, and typos goes in 검색어. Filterable attributes go into the attribute fields. Variant-defining specs go into option names. Everything long-tail goes into detail page text.
Then measure. Coupang's ranking reacts to sales velocity and conversion as much as to text relevance, so your first keyword allocation is a hypothesis, not a conclusion. Track your position on the specific head terms you targeted, daily, and re-cut the allocation when a term stalls — SeoulRank's daily Coupang rank tracking exists so you can do that in English instead of reverse-engineering search result pages by hand.
A practical review cadence: check rank movement weekly, revise 검색어 tags monthly, and only touch the product name when you have a clear reason. Name edits reset some of the trust your listing has accumulated, so treat that slot as the most expensive one to change.
- One concept per token, one slot per concept — no keyword should appear in more than one slot
- Prioritize by intent, not just volume: a mid-volume term with clear purchase intent beats a broad head term you cannot rank for
- Log every listing edit with a date so you can attribute rank movement to a specific change
- Re-audit slots 3 and 4 quarterly; they decay silently as Coupang adds attribute fields
