Selling on Coupang from Abroad: What Nobody Tells You About Korean Search

Coupang has made cross-border selling genuinely easy on paper: an English seller portal, no Korean business entity required, settlement in USD, and even US warehouses that feed Coupang's own logistics network into Korea and Taiwan. Korea is the world's 4th-largest e-commerce market, and Coupang is its Amazon. The signup is the easy part.

What the onboarding materials undersell is this: once your listing is live, everything that determines whether you sell happens in Korean.

The three walls foreign sellers hit

1. The keyword wall. Coupang asks for at least five search keywords per listing and recommends they be primarily Korean. There is no keyword research tool in the seller portal, no search-volume data, and no English-language equivalent of the tools Amazon sellers take for granted. Most foreign sellers translate their Amazon keywords and hope — see our guide on why that fails.

2. The listing wall. Korean product pages are a different art form: long, image-heavy, vertically-scrolling detail pages with dense text baked into graphics. A US-style bullet-point listing reads as low-effort to Korean consumers, who interpret detail-page quality as a proxy for seller trustworthiness.

3. The visibility wall. After launch you have no idea where you rank. Coupang's search results are personalized and fast-moving, checking by hand requires Korean queries, and no mainstream rank tracker covers Coupang. Sellers routinely discover weeks late that a price change or a competitor's promotion pushed them off page 1.
